A beehive kit is everything a colony needs in one box: bottom board, brood box, frames, foundation and cover. We stock Langstroth kits in 8 and 10 frame widths, single and double level, with telescoping or gabled covers, and in three levels of assembly.
Assembled or unassembled?
Unassembled kits ship flat and cost less, and the woodenware goes together with glue and nails over an evening. Assembled kits arrive built and ready for bees. Assembled and painted kits are wax dipped and finished, which is the closest thing to opening a box and installing a package the same afternoon.
8 frame or 10 frame?
A 10 frame box is the traditional standard and gives the colony more room per box. An 8 frame box is narrower and noticeably lighter when full, which is why it has become popular with anyone who would rather not lift 90 pounds off a stand. Neither is better for the bees. Pick one and stay with it, because boxes, frames and covers are not interchangeable between the two.
What is not in the kit?
Bees, and the gear you wear and carry. You will need protective clothing, a hive tool and a smoker before your first inspection, and a feeder to get a new colony started.
